December 17, 20160
MoU-DRFM-B-2 (1)

MoU Signed between BRAC University and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in support of the Digital RMG Factory Mapping in Bangladesh (DRFM-B) Project

BRAC University (BRACU) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the collection of credible and comprehensive data about the RMG industry, to prepare a publicly accessible interactive online map of the industry.

Professor Rahim B Talukdar, PhD (Adviser, CED, BRAC University), and Mr Md Siddiqur Rahman, President, BGMEA signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations while Mr Shantanu Singh (Unit Leader, General Manager, C&A Sourcing, Bangladesh), among others, was present as the representative of the C&A Foundation.

BGMEA Senior Vice President Mr. Faruque Hassan, Vice President (Finance) Mr. Mohammed Nasir, Vice President Mr. Ferdous Perves Bivon, and Director Mr Munir Hossain were also present at the MoU signing ceremony held at BGMEA Conference Room on 15 December 2016.

The digital mapping project titled “Digital RMG Factory Mapping in Bangladesh (DRFM-B) will be implemented by the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED), BRAC University, coordinated by BRAC USA, with lead funding from C&A Foundation and anticipated additional co-funders.

The objective of this project is to provide accurate, credible and updated RMG factory information to industry stakeholders in a manner that enhances confidence in the ability of the sector to contribute to equitable development in Bangladesh.

Without having credible, industry-wide data on the number of factories, including subcontract factories, the number of workers, factory locations and much more, challenges will remain across the Bangladesh Ready Made Garment (RMG) Industry.

This project is the first of its kind to map RMG factories across all garment-producing districts in Bangladesh, providing a detailed industry-wide database of factories, including subcontractors, on an interactive, digital map. In addition to collecting factory names and locations, the map will also feature information such as numbers of workers, product type, export country, certifications, and brand customers, etc.

The project will be guided by a multi-stakeholder Project Advisory Committee, including representatives of workers, NGOs, donors, employers, and industry associations, among others.
