On Global Climathon Day (25 October 2019), over 135 cities started a solutions-hackathon aimed to tackle local climate challenges. The hackathon is part of Climathon, a global year-round programme initiated by EIT Climate-KIC, to mobilize cities and citizens to take climate action together.
This year, the focus of the Climathon was on solving 3 issues as follows:
- Food safety,
- Waste management and
- Energy consumption.
Climathon-Dhaka identifies local climate challenges in close collaboration with related stakeholders. During the solutions-hackathon, Climathon brings together entrepreneurs, innovators, programmers, designers and professionals to develop solutions.
During 25-26 October 2019, an event for the opening ceremony on Climathon took place at Daily Star Centre focusing on solving issues regarding food safety, waste management and sustainable energy consumption, according to a press release issued in this regard.
Around eighty (80) students from different universities along with many professionals from Government, UNDP, IPDC finance, Brac University, ULAB, TORUN Digital, and Daily Star attended the program.
At the Opening Ceremony, Professor Dr. Rahim B Talukdar (Adviser, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED), Brac University) was present as the Special Guest among other distinguished guests inclusing Ms. Waseqa Ayesha Khan, MP, GoB was the Chief Guest of the Opening Ceremony.
The 30-hour long event ended on 26 October 2019 with prize giving and Closing Ceremony. The participants worked hard sleeplessly this long time to find the solutions on the issues happening for the climate change globally. Mr. Shamim Ehsanul Haque (Assistant Professor, Brac Business School and Senior Research Fellow of CED) was present in the closing ceremony as a Special Guest with other distinguishes guests. Three teams including one from Brac University won the prizes in three categories. Mr. Atiqul Islam, hon’ble Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation graced the Closing Ceremony as the Chief Guest.
Gen Lab was the organizer of the Climathon Dhaka event supported by the EIT, a body of the European Union. Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) is the incubation partner of the Climathon 2019 in Dhaka to provide mentoring and incubation services to the winning teams in their challenging journey of implementation of their projects.
