Summit on RMG Sector with NYU Stern
During April 27-29 2014, CED jointly facilitated a 2-day summit with one of the leading business schools of the world: Stern School of Business, University of New York (NYU Stern). This very important summit brought the key stakeholders of the Bangladeshi garments sector and engendered an atmosphere where they can talk on the pressing issues that are affecting the sector. The summit was crucial to the sector and the various international stakeholders especially in the wake of the Rana Plaza disaster and the subsequent criticism and consumer backlash that has the potential of seriously undermining the future prospect of the sector.
Stern Business School’s Center for Human Rights and Business came up with an unsolicited report after Rana Plaza which brought to the fore some of the core business practices that can allegedly contribute to unsafe and hazardous business situations like Rana Plaza. The findings of the report were shared with the stakeholders and solutions that were agreed upon by all yet conforms to global standards were sought through the summit.
As one of the principal entrepreneurial success stories of Bangladesh, the RMG sector is unparalleled on a global scale. CED’s involvement to this effort by Stern Business School comes not owing to CED having any relevance to the sector, but its ability to bring together the entrepreneurs and vital stakeholders as a neutral, non-interested entity that is conscious to the scope, potential and present crisis of the sector. CED will plan the future summits for this effort and at this stage two more congregations are foreseen both by NYU and CED.
